I'm sad to say that it's probably legal in many (most?) states.
Most places you can spank/hit a child as hard and as much as you want.
Even with objects.
Look at this short report, about corporal punishment in schools (yeah, can you imagine), and read the comments under if after, they are mind blowing, but it gives a sense of what lots of them think about it.
(It clearly states that kids with disabilities is at higher risk for corporal punishment in schools too.)
It's heart braking.
They don't think it's abuse. I've been online with majority of US citizens for years, on more mainstream places than mothering, and when I say spanking is abuse they laugh. It's not abuse to them, it's the right thing to do in many cases, they think. And when I say it's illegal here to do anything physical towards your child, they think that's outrages, that the state can decide how you can raise your child.
The mindset is totally different about corporal punishment, it's incredibly sad to hear the opinions about it. And I'm so glad that mothering has so many members. ('Coz the mothering members are against corporal punishment.)
The mindset is also totally different in re. to what parents should have the right to do. Most americans think that parents have the right to do whatever they want to their kids, and they wont call CPS about abuse in so many (most) cases, becaue they don't think the state should interfere and ruin peoples lives. (That's how they view it.)
It's so heart braking you just wanna cry.
